The magical island, Majuli is the largest fresh water mid-river deltaic island in the world and is located in the banks of Brahmaputra River, Assam. It is a hotspot for flora and fauna and is considered as the cradle of Assamese civilization. Its wide blue sky, Holy River floating across the banks, and beautiful landscape is the best example of God’s creation. Those have dreamed to spend a couple of days in the lap of nature will feel like getting touched with heaven, when they visit Majuli.  How to reach /Access for Majuli

One can take the bus or a hired taxi to the Nimati Steamer Ghat and from where rowing boats run.

  • Accessible by boats from the Jorhat i.e. 20 km from Majuli.
  • Time to reach: 3 hrs. (With three bus rides and two boat rides).
  • Best time to visit: Autumn and winter.

Way they entertained / Festivals of Majuli

  • Rasleela: three day festival held usually in mid-November: Celebrates the legendary love of Radha and Krishna and the devotion of the gopis to Krishna.
  • Ali-ai-ligang: February-March: A colourful annual festival of the Misings, the ceremonial sowing of paddy starts on this day.
  • Bathow Puja: A festival performed by the Sonowal Kacharis tribe where Lord Shiva, is worshipped with high veneration.
  • Paal Naam at Auniati Satra is a huge attraction, held at the end of autumn.

  • Is a pollution free fresh water island.
  • Signifies land between two parallel rivers.
  • Recognized as the cultural capital of Assam
  • Has over 22 Vaishnava monasteries or satras viz. Kamalabari, Auniati, Dakhinpat, Benegenaati, Shamaguri, Garamurh, etc.
  • Total area: 1250 km2, due to soil erosion, it is reduced to 421.65 km2.
  • Location: Sub-division of District Jorhat of Upper Assam.
  • Formed by the Brahmaputra River in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti, an anabranch of the Brahmaputra, joined by the Subansiri River in the north.
  • Is on the verge of extinction due to the continuous shrinking of its shoreline (तटरेखा).
